The "Best Landscape
Slope Awards" Award Presentation
Ceremony
With the drive on sustainable development and improving our environment
steered by the Steering Committee on Greening chaired by PS (W)
for ETW, the Government endeavours to improve and landscape the
urban environment of Hong Kong through various means. The greening
and landscaping of Government slopes has been going on for several
years and the Government has achieved significant results. One
of the main objectives of the Awards is to increase public awareness
and arouse slope owners' interest in providing landscape treatment
to their slopes along with the maintenance works, and hence create
a safer, greener and better living environment for the people of
Hong Kong.
The event was jointly organised by four organisations, (The Professional
Green Building Council, The Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects,
Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies, and Civil
Engineering Department).
The Award scheme was launched on 10 June 2003. At the deadline
of submission on 1 November 2003, there were 55 entries, involving
90 slopes, with half from private and half from Government departments.
An assessment panel has been formed consisting of 7 members including,
Professor Jim Chi-yung (HKU), Dr Lee Lok-sze of Polar Foundation,
Mrs Mei Ng Fong Siu-mei of Friends of the Earth, and representatives
of the above four organisations. The Assessment Panel selected
4 slopes as finalists out of 15 short-listed slopes for their uniqueness
in landscape design, naturalness, and environmental sustainability.
The Assessment Panel members visited the four slopes on 5 February
2004 to decide and agree on the final ranking of champion, 1st
runner-up and 2nd runner-ups. The Awards were announced at the
ceremony held in the Theme Atrium of Olympian City II, Kowloon
on 16 February 2004. Eleven other slopes were awarded with Merits
at the ceremony. Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works
was the officiating guest for the ceremony.
